We've raised $1 billion from Microsoft and will be working together to build next-generation supercomputers, with the goal of building a platform within Azure which will scale to AGI: https://t.co/5tzkVusSRJ

Super exciting news: Microsoft is investing $1B into OpenAI, and we're partnering to build giant NN computers within Azure that will train giant NNs! https://t.co/PzJG5lPpkX

“Most of that $1 billion, @sama said, will be spent on the computing power OpenAI needs to achieve its ambitions. And under the terms of the new contract, Microsoft will eventually become the lab’s sole source of computing power.” https://t.co/aPgqfYJQ9m https://t.co/6Prf1tFNuM

The NYT article is misleading here. We'll definitely spend the $1B within 5 years, and maybe much faster. It's also not Azure credits:https://t.co/YXmclmZDok

What is OpenAI? I don't know anymore.
A non-profit that leveraged good will whilst silently giving out equity for years prepping a shift to for-profit that is now seeking to license closed tech through a third party by segmenting tech under a banner of pre/post "AGI" technology? https://t.co/X6JIIuvcAd

Many of their blog posts and spoken positions end up influencing govt policy and public opinion on the future of AI through amplified pseudo-credibility due to "Open", "Musk founded", repeatedly hyped statements, and a sheen from their now distant non-profit good will era.

The claim is that AGI needs to be carefully and collaboratively guided into existence yet the output of almost every other existing commercial lab is more open. OpenAI runs a closed ecosystem where they primarily don't or won't trust outside of a small bubble.

The implicit OpenAI message heard over the years:
"Think of how transformative and dangerous AGI may be. Terrifying. Trust us. Whether it's black-boxing technology, legal risk, policy initiatives, investor risk, ... - trust us with everything. We're good. No questions, sorry."

Personally, I feel bad for the employees. It must be disappointing to sign up for a non-profit org that aims at doing open AI research in the public interest, only to find out a bit later than your job is now to make Azure a more attractive enterprise AI cloud than AWS & GCP
