I agree with Radek, these aren't opposing ideas. Another writer to check out is Cal Newport, who has written a lot on both the need to space studying over many days + 'deep work' without distractions.

I have not read Mindshift but in Mind for numbers there is the concept of two modes thinking.

You use the focused mode to analyze something in depth. This is groundwork for forming a memory chunk and also to seed the other mechanism, the diffused, unconscious mode of thinking. pic.twitter.com/xEmLJgq3gH
